Data Quality: Why Fleet Decisions Are Only as Good as the Inputs
Many learned scholars and philosophers have said, “You get out of this life what you put into it,” and the funny thing is, data and databases are the same. Information does not magically appear in database collation if it is not present in the information that was fed into it.
Databases, in this respect, act like a living thing. Every time something affects them—every time the information is adjusted—they change. Just like living things, they are also subject to being corrupted.
AusFleet is no different, and the best way to make sure you are getting everything out of the system that you need is to ensure the information it’s given—like vehicle specs, usage data, odometer accuracy—is accurate.
There are five attributes of accurate data inputs that one must think about when adding information to AusFleet, or any database, really.
Accuracy depends on the truthfulness of the input. Wrong labels will give wrong classifications, wrong numbers will give wrong calculations, and wrong assumptions will result in inaccurate conclusions.
Incomplete data creates blind spots. Missing data doesn’t just reduce accuracy — it can distort the entire picture of your fleet’s health and safety. Missing sensor readings from GPS or inaccurate odometer reporting can hide safety issues, and inaccurate pre-start checks can hide vehicular issues and dangerous problems with vehicles.
Errors propagate and multiply. Quite simply, things like inaccurate renewal dates can cause vehicles to miss their registration renewals, and if this information isn’t corrected, the mistake continues year after year. The same goes for scheduled services: eventually the services start to catch up and put the safety of the driver at risk, which is a significant WHS concern.
Decision-making relies on trustworthy outputs. We make decisions based on data — fact. If information about fuel usage, vehicle replacement, or driver capability is based on bad data, it can affect financial planning, forecasting, risk assessment, and safety and compliance.
Quality input reduces cost and rework. Fixing data after it has been discovered to be inaccurate is costly and time‑consuming. Ensuring your data is correct from the start prevents manual corrections, miscommunication, system flaws, and wasted staff time spent playing detective to find where the “rotten apple” is in the box.
Essentially, accurate and complete input data in AusFleet is the single biggest factor in producing precise, meaningful, and trustworthy data results.
Over the last few months we have spent allot of time with customers, whom due to factors beyond their control have lost domain knowledge and/or are suffering from decisions made decades ago. As a business, working in consultation with a handful of our long-term customers we have developed a set of new tools, and a step-by-step approach to re-fresh, re-train and re-launch a “re-invigorated” AusFleet. IF you’re interested in a re-focus on your data — which is by the way how you get the very best from the AusFleet system reach out to your account manager, or via customerservice@ausfleet.net.
